Along with Sonic Blue and Shell Pink, the Fender custom colour Surf Green was originally taken from the automotive industry's nitrocellulose paint supplies (originally a 1957 Duco Chevy colour) and offered alongside its darker counterpart Foam Green as an official Fender custom colour between 1960 and 1965 (Foam Green continued until 1969, surviving into the CBS era).
During the 1950s and 1960s, Fender's use of undercoats in their factory was very inconsistent producing bodies both with and without an undercoat. A white primer was the most common choice for undercoat during this time and the photographs above demonstrate the visual contrast created between the Surf Green finish, the white primer and the raw wood beneath where relicing and aging has been applied.
As Surf Green only survived a relatively short period of time before CBS discontinued it, it has always been a popular vintage colour and we are very pleased to be able to offer either two-piece alder or swamp ash (the earliest originals were swamp ash whilst later pre-CBS were alder) boutique vintage replica bodies in Surf Green, with the correct contours and worm route, thin and accurate nitrocellulose finish, and reliced to your requirements.
