The Custom Fender Telecaster was produced from 1959 and was then dropped from Fender lineup again in 1968 whilst under CBS control. The addition of binding to the front and back of the body (the only distinguishing difference between a Fender Custom Telecaster and a 'standard' Telecaster) is largely accepted as having been a subtle acknowledgement to the construction techniques used in acoustic guitars, and to add an additional feel of class and quality in an attempt to attract a wider market.
The Custom Telecaster was first introduced into Fender's model lines in 1959 (although there are earlier true 'custom' examples from Fender) but as it commanded a substantially higher than its standard Telecaster counterpart, and with the popularity of the Stratocaster then on the rise, the Custom Telecaster was never fully embraced by the guitar-playing community.
In our opinion, the bound Custom Telecaster is one of the best-looking guitars ever to come out of the Fullerton (California) Fender factory and we are pleased to be able to offer a 1959-specification (and visually stunning) clone of this vintage model. The originals were only ever built from alder which is why this is offered in bookmatched two-piece alder with an off-centre joint, cream (and aged) binding, and genuine nitrocellulose hand-painted sunburst finish, built in the same way the originals were, and reliced to accurately show the wear and tear that a forty year-old body would.
We can also offer this body in a variety of other colour and finish options (the originals were only built in sunburst with a very small smattering of black examples), so please feel free to get in touch if sunburst isn't quite what you're after and we will be happy to accommodate your requirements. These types of guitar bodies look particularly good in Olympic White or metallic finishes such as Candy Apple Red or Lake Placid Blue!
